Hello I make this topic to try to gather with you all the various references that TimeSplitters' saga contains. And when TS was referenced.

We all recongnized once a reference whether in the field of cinema, music, video games and many other areas I guess :)

I already made this topic on a french forum over here :

www.jeuxvideo.com/forums/1-14215-15619-1...e-time-splitters.htm

But I must admit that it made a flop because of the lack of life on the forum ... But some members helped me though ;)

In any case I'll be glad as this can be here and read by other fans !

I'll put everything in disorder for the moment.

Well I have a big translation to do now ! Your help is part of the thing :P
Any indication or more is welcome !

1 smiley = 1 reference

B) SHAUN OF THE DEAD ( 2004, Edgar Wright )

The first reference is a wink, or an easter egg of TimeSplitters in the movie :

Now I'll put all references in the
games from somewhere else , there
are not many references to TimeSplitters.

CINEMA REFERENCES

 JURASSIC PARK ( 1993, Steven Spielberg )

TimeSplitters Future Perfect, Mansion of madness:

Pictures speak for themeselves !

Jurassic Park ->

TimeSplitters ->

 CITIZEN KANE ( 1941, Orson Welles )

TimeSplitters Future Perfect, ending: " Rosebud "

At the end of the game,
Warning: Spoiler! [ Click to expand ]

 THE SHINING ( 1980, Stanley Kubrick )

Time splitters Future Perfect, Hotel level:
  • This level is a horror hotel as in The Shining
  • We can clearly recongnize a part of the hotel in the level

Visit a little and you will found the room with the same structure ( Same stairs, a fireplace at the right side, and backwards 2 poles dividing this space into 3 parts up and down )

  • " REDRUM " is written in red on many walls, as in the movie

  • Those amazing soundtracks have similarities with a slow and heavy atmosphere created by the random creepy noises and bass instrumental parts

  • In the movie there's some emphasis on red at screen, in the level this intention could be true too

  • THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT ( 1999, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez )

    TimeSplitters Future Perfect, Hotel level:

A member of the french forum wrote that the hand marks on walls could be a reference to this movie.

    ;) THE FRENCH CONNECTION ( 1971, William Friedkin and Philip D'Antoni )

You certainly made the link with the name of the level in TS3 " The Russian connection "

    BLADE RUNNER ( 1998, Paul W.S. Anderson )

    TimeSplitters 2, Neotokyo:
References here are numerous since it's almost the whole level which is a reference. There's the same special atmosphere:

    • You can hear the traffic lights with the famous " Cross now " like in the movie with the " Walk now ".
  • The weather is rainy, the blue lights with neons and japanese glowing signs at night, the streets reflects and it creates an abyssal atmosphere.

  • The police flying cars are the same ! With the same noise, you can compare you'll see ! It's wonderful !

  • /!\ BLADE RUNNER SPOIL /!\ ( There is a video to compare the atmosphere )

Warning: Spoiler! [ Click to expand ]

/!\ END OF THE SPOIL /!\

    Now for the music.

Listen with attention to those two music, you will recognize a set of 4 musical notes:

    DO - LA # - SOL b - SOL / C5 - A4,5 - G4,5 -G4

    TS ->

    Blade Runner ->

In TimeSplitters, Graeme Norgate put exactly this set of notes at the start, so we can hear it clearly. Then it turns into wonderful TimeSplitters' own soundtrack with sometimes this set repeated, and it ends with it as it started.

:woohoo: INDIANA JONES RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
    ( 1981, Steven Spielberg/ Georges Lucas )

    TimeSplitters 2, in aztec runes:

In the 2nd part of the level, at a time you are in a slope and a big rock is rolling behind you ( and crushes the aztec warriors breaking your balls in the best case )

Plus, earlier in this scene, Indiana finds himself in front of a trapped guy who is pierced by spears that come and go from the wall, as in the level in TS2, there is a skullhead on one or two of the spears.
At the end of the scene there are aztec warriors.
There are many other elements of the whole level that reminds the movie, obviously not all.
Ash and Jones are both adventurous explorers but they are quite different!

:pinch: THE EXORCIST ( 1973, William Friedkin )

    TimeSplitters Future Perfect.

    Edwina

    Deadwina

You can see that there are 2 versions of Edwina, an human one and an evil zombie one. ( Even if both seems evil :x )

If you're not conviced, remember the little animation of the girl with the sentence of Deadwina " Do you see what your cunning daughter has done? ... my mother sucks lollipops in hell ! ", in The Exorcist the possessed girl says " Your mother sucks cocks in hell ! ".
    Clear similarities with various lines:

 GHOST WHISPERER ( 2005-2010, John Gray )

I know it isn't a movie, but I've found something with this TV show and Edwina so I put this here.

Do you recognize her? The clothes are almost the same and both have long brown hair!
In the arcade mode there's a match to play as Edwina which is called " I like dead people ", in Ghost Whisperer the girl says " I speak with dead people ".

It's amazing and funny to imagine that TS turned up the kind little Melinda girl into a pseudo possessed Regan ( The possessed girl in the movie ) !

Well I've finished with the big part devoted to movies, now I'll put some more general cinematographic cliche ( But I'm sure that there's more specific thing to find out there ;) )

THE WESTERN is the theme of the Wild west level in TimeSplitters 2. You can easily find the elements of a Western movie, it's all made with this.
I'm not going to list that because I haven't any western movie to link with this and it would be more interesting to compare specifically.

    SCIENCE FICTION :

    - MACHINE WARS, is in the timeline of TimeSplitters, so it appears in the 3 of them.
Not commenting more for the same reason ( Even if obviously The Terminator is part of the theme ).

    - SCIENTIFIC MEDICAL EXPERIMENT GONE WRONG, as in the level of the damn in Siberia ( TS2 ), and the U-Genix one ( TS3 ).

It's all that we've got on the movies for the moment, I'm so fond of TimeSplitters, it made me discover so many things about cinema and music !
    Such a great saga !

I watched Citizen Kane to understand what was " Rosebud ", so I was in the same place that the guys in the movie looking for it too ! We had the same goal, isn't this wonderful to manage to create such a link between me, a 19 year old guy in 2014 and protagonists from a 1941 movie !?

    :)

Thanks StringOps, I didn't found that all alone, on the other forum the guy Johk26 helped me a lot giving me some new references that I didn't notice !
And with some videos on Yt it's very easy to explain the thing as for Jurassic Park !

Well I will continue to compete the thread with other references !

    VIDEO GAME REFERENCES

    B) JAMES BOND GOLDENEYE ( 1997, Rareware, Nintendo )

 PERFECT DARK ( 2000, Rareware, Nintendo )

A certain Stefandorf made a very explicit and well done video about this, so I guess that I can stop typing.

    MUSIC REFERENCES

    BLACK SABBATH ( 1969 - 1979, UK )

Lenny Oldburn is the character who feeds his " Princess " in the level " What Lies Below " ... He's actually an Ozzy Osbourne's gaming alter ego too!
    • Ozzy Osbourne and Lenny Oldburn have phonetical similarites in their names.
    • Lenny Oldburn screams " ROCK'N'ROOOOOOLL " when you choose him.
    • They are alike :

    Ozzy Osbourne

    Lenny Oldburn

I wonder why TimeSplitters never got noticed as much as Golden Eye. These games are very similar. I never even thought about a comparison.

Thank you so much MEEK and Terrainer, I didn't knew those references! Again a Stanley Kubrick's movie, so f*cking cool, now I think about Clockwork Orange when I play on Venise waiting for THE moment

I absolutely didn't know that Time Splitters also referenced Shaun Of The Dead in TS:FP with Climp Clamp's quote!

Fauch > I don't have anymore TS1, but I do have TS2, is it in " Hit me baby one morgue time " ?

P.S: Are you the french Fauch that made cool maps and posted it on Yt ?

SWERTYMAN > I guess that it's a question of exclusivity and generation ... The remake of Goldeneye didn't have a big success.

To me TS is as good as Goldeneye considering both in their own context an period, TS certainly also suffered of a low advertising campaign ...

That's why I think that TS:RE is a really good thing for TS fans, because it will really give the occasion to the whole generation to know that such a saga exists, it's a big advertising
