So, i recently try out to make maps for Left 4 Dead 2.
So far i know some basics. But i really want to progress even further than that. A friend of mine even want to make a survival map of VR (Timesplitters Future Perfect, not sure if we're allowed to copy the map.)

What i'd like are some tips and tricks for map making. ( For those who are familiar to Source SDK ) And i hope once i think i'm advanced enough i might make some TS maps if i could and can.

Thank you for your attention
P.S. Sorry for my English, it ain't my primary language.

Hello there.

There are several points you should take care of when making a map.

Balancing of items and the actual item placing.
- In most multiplayer maps you want the better items to be harder to achieve, so you could think of making one work for it before someone can get a powerful item or even a gd armor (or similar).

Lightsettings.
- The lighting sets the mood, you should definitely try out to experiment with lightsettings and individual lighting for (almost) each room.

Make it diverse and not look the same everywhere.
- Even a map like VR achieves this. If the pacing is right you might be able to even out the hot-zones (where the battle is), but if you don't want to expect the same chances of battles around every corner you might want to set up an alternative route to your objective, and even a 3rd possible way.

For your information...
I only ever built maps on TSFP (never really got into Far Cry 2 or any other map maker), so I won't be able to help you out with the Source SDK map making stuff and can only give you these general advices.
Time to unleash the arse-kickulator!

It's certainly too late to answer, but you have a guy on the forum, "Fauch", who is one of the best map-maker I've ever seen... Maybe he will help you if you ask him to :)

I've been using Hammer for more than a few years, so I knew a few tips and tricks.

- Clipping Tool
You can use this tool to make steady slopes and "fake" destructive scenery such as walls and doors. All you have to do is make a brush, select the clipping tool, click on a corner of that brush and drag the line to another part of the brush.

- Custom Textures
Importing your own textures isn't as difficult as you might think. All you need to do is convert your images to a VTF format with VTFEdit. If you want to know more about importing textures to Hammer, just let me know. I can even help you make animated textures. :)

- Lighting
You may want to experiment with the Light_environment entity to make the lighting in your maps look better. You can even use Env_sun to make a sun or a moon for your map.

I have a word of advise as well. Never use the carve tool because it can really screw up your map. I learned that the hard way.
