Aren't most indie devs scared/don't care to do something different? I mean a ton of those indie games on steam are just crappy little pixel games with bad graphics justified under the guise of being "retro", and gameplay that falter in comparison to certain flash games from years ago.
Not saying indie devs are bad, but there's just a ton out there that try to make a quick buck off of a poor game. I can't even bother to try to tell what's good on steam because it's like mining for gold.
There are good indie devs such as Torn Banner Studios, who make Chivalry Medieval Warfare. Again, SUPERHOT is a great change from the usual FPS, and even Amnesia and Penumbra and that are indie (I believe). Most of the time, indie is stereotyped as those pixel games simply because many of them do that - but there are ones that really shine through. You also have Bohemia Interactive with ARMA and Facepunch with Gmod and Rust, Mojang with Minecraft and also Wolfire Games with their games.
