Aren't most indie devs scared/don't care to do something different? I mean a ton of those indie games on steam are just crappy little pixel games with bad graphics justified under the guise of being "retro", and gameplay that falter in comparison to certain flash games from years ago.

Not saying indie devs are bad, but there's just a ton out there that try to make a quick buck off of a poor game. I can't even bother to try to tell what's good on steam because it's like mining for gold.

There are good indie devs such as Torn Banner Studios, who make Chivalry Medieval Warfare. Again, SUPERHOT is a great change from the usual FPS, and even Amnesia and Penumbra and that are indie (I believe). Most of the time, indie is stereotyped as those pixel games simply because many of them do that - but there are ones that really shine through. You also have Bohemia Interactive with ARMA and Facepunch with Gmod and Rust, Mojang with Minecraft and also Wolfire Games with their games.

Ah, Minecraft. Never a better example of wasted potential, and how willing people are to throw everything away to be lazy and make tons of cash.

It at least tried to be different, and also supports modding, which is a plus.

It doesn't support modding at all. Notch breaks the whole thing after each update. And he still hasn't added 90% of the shit he promised. Making the game easy to mod included.

In fact, most of the updates have just been player mods officially added into the game.

Actually, this guy explains things pretty well.

Well I guess you're right - I wouldn't say 'supports' - I'd say you have the ability to mod.

It would be easier to mod that than, say, Warframe.

Sure minecraft doesn't have that much support but still it is an open sandbox you can build or try to do whatever you want and yes some things could be different (especially in mod support) but hey in my opinion no game is perfect and every game has it ups and downs. Plus it's your own choice to play a game or not.
A different meaning of a word can make a discussion go on and on...
